KnIGA 2024

On December 20, the jury of the first edition of the KnIGA literary competition announced the results and awarded prizes. The participants’ task was to face the problem of relationships, referring in the form of an essay to the statement: To organize your life, you need to throw away unnecessary people and move forward – self-care textbooks teach. When does responsibility for a relationship mean that it must be cut off, and when does cutting off a relationship mean an escape from responsibility for another person?

The first prize went to Nina and the second to Tosia. Laudations for both essays were written and delivered by Olga Masiuk:

Nina’s winning essay is characterized by lightness of content and style. The author opens her text to various images: literary (she recalls the musings of Marcin Wicha), pseudo-literary (she parodies the poetics of self-care guides) and those taken from life (she wonderfully portrays the character of her neighbor, Mrs. Tereska – a bit of an old lady-freak, a bit of a philosopher). Nina connects these worlds, both with her presence, which is revealed in her sensitivity and sense of humor, and with her stylistic virtuosity – the author was able to play with words – as evidenced by the title itself, as well as many memorable phrases – e.g. “museum of all my relationships”.  The essay is a beautifully written praise of relationships, friendships or acquaintances.

Tosia’s awarded work is characterized by great sincerity. The author sometimes hides behind an interesting second-person narrative, but even then the text retains a personal character. Writing here comes from observing life – Tosia processes entries from TikTok, looking for traces of thinking about relationships typical of modern times. Contrary to the language and content of these entries, the author approaches with great understanding and sensitivity what we often too hastily call the toxicity of vampire personalities. He writes about them tenderly and persuasively, evoking the same understanding in readers.

Olga Masiuk also published conversations with the participants of the competition entitled Literaturetherapy. All participants of the ceremony could sign up to the list to receive the post-competition volume.
